Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, has fired the state
commissioner of Environment and Sustainability, Mr. Reginald Okun, over the
recent protest by the state street sweepers.
In a statement signed by Secretary to the State Government,
Osarodion Ogie, the state government directed the officials to “handover their
assignments to the most senior government official in their offices with
immediate effect. They are also to handover all government property in their
possession to the appropriate authorities.”
The sweepers had taken to the streets to protest the
non-payment of their allowances for six months.
Immediately he got wind of their protest, the state governor
terminated the appointment of the commissioner and retired the General Manager,
Edo State Waste Management Board, Aiyamenkue Akonofua. A source in the
governor’s office said he saw the protest as an embarrassment to his
administration.
